Home on the web

It is the highlight of the design diary: the Salone Internazionale del Mobile - a long weekend in which Milan becomes the capital of furniture, not just of fashion. From Wednesday 18 to Monday April 23.

It may take some time before the creations seen next week in Italy hit the virtual high street, but plenty of design classics are just a click away. Brands from Artemide to Zazzeri reside on www.europebynet.com - here you can pick up designer furniture at discounted prices. The Cattelan Italia Spiral (it claims to be a coffee table but how mugs don't topple off its tilting surface is beyond me) is on sale for £665, which is about £300 cheaper than elsewhere. Leap of faith has customers shopping for furniture on internet

While consumers are becoming increasingly confident about going online to buy mass-produced products such as books and DVDs, buying designer furniture over the internet may require a certain leap of faith. Yet Julie Edwards, a former investment banker, has created a thriving internet business selling upmarket Italian furniture. The reason, she says, is that "rip-off Britain" allows her Europe by Net business to sell expensive designer products online at prices consumers cannot resist.

The cheapest version of the company's best-selling sofa, which is available in a variety of sizes and coverings, is £4,407 - compared with £6,099 on the high street. A mirror designed by Philippe Starck is priced at £1,051 - just over half the UK retail price of £1,999. "The mark-up in the UK is so high that we can pay for the transport costs and make a profit while undercutting shop prices by up to 40 per cent," Ms Edwards says. Click here for the full article.

My entire experience with your company was great. I had been shopping for a dresser to match the La Falegnami bed my husband and I bought last year. The bed, ordered from a local representative took almost 8 months to be delivered, with much follow-up on my part. Buying high ticket items on line made me a bit anxious, but I decided to try your company, since I thought it couldn't take longer than the bed. Your customer service representative told me the lead time was 12-14 weeks. I placed my order on May 5 and the furniture was in my house on August 7! In between that time, I received e-mail confirmation on my order and deposit; another mail to say the furniture was on the way and a call shortly after to arrange delivery. The whole transaction was simple, efficient and delivered as promised. Additionally, your prices were better than competative, even with air shipping.

Kudos to Europe by Net for knowing what customer service really means. I have told many friends about my "find" and I know I'll be shopping with you again in the future.

Online Shopper: European Shopping Spree, No Suitcase Needed

Earlier this month I took a virtual journey on the Internet to find European online stores with merchandise, including some great deals, that allowed me to gawk like a tourist without having to endure the actual pain of spending, say, $6 for a cup of coffee. And I found that at Europebynet.com I could save 40 percent on trendy furniture from 90 different European manufacturers.

Sites like Europebynet.com do a healthy business with American shoppers because prices are low, said Julie Edwards, the owner. "We sell 40 percent of our stuff in the U.S.," she said. Her furniture costs 30 percent to 40 percent less than it would in American stores because "we sell at the local market price, not the marked-up price," Ms. Edwards said. "If something made by an Italian manufacturer sells in Italy for $100 but sells in the U.S. for $170, we sell it for $100."

And although shipping one piece of furniture can be expensive, on a bulk order, the savings add up.
